Country Singers Who Tell A Great Story

What is the best kind of station to tune into on a long, lonesome drive? It depends on personal tastes, of course, but there is a definite sense of satisfaction to be found in a classic country station. Many country singers draw from a long, rich narrative tradition, so one is much more likely to encounter story-songs in this genre than any other. Thus, one can expect to listen to engaging tales a mere few minutes in length, and the fact that they are told through music simply makes them easier to latch onto. There’s nothing quite like hearing a satisfying story on the radio when a person is all alone and eager to return to loved ones.

Several singers spring to mind when considering this type of music. One of the undisputed masters is Kenny Rogers, who established himself as an accomplished balladeer decades ago. Of his many richly drawn story-songs complete with vibrant characters and a riveting plot, the most enduring has been “The Gambler,” in which a man relates his encounter with a grizzled poker player on an evening train ride. Not only is this tale of a newly forged friendship between men who share a hobby entertaining, it contains some very practical advice that can be applied to everyone, not just those with an enthusiasm for card-playing.

On the other end of the age spectrum is Taylor Swift, a promising up-and-comer who has been writing her own songs since her early teens and has a singular way of getting the heart of teen loves and anxieties. She has built a reputation as a wholesome singer-songwriter who speaks for the geekier members of her generation. Her most potent anthem is “You Belong With Me,” made far more poignant by the music video that accompanies it. Here, we see an ordinary girl pining for the friend she secretly loves and wishing he would understand what a great match they would make. For anyone who has experienced a burning crush, this certainly hits home.

These are only two examples out of the dozens of country singers whose stories fill the airwaves. Others include the deep-voiced Randy Travis, gentle Alan Jackson and effusive Dolly Parton, to name just a few. The beauty of it is that one needn’t know who the singer is to appreciate a good country song. It’s easy to just sit and listen to a string of unknown songs and soak up the colorful characters and twisty plots that emerge. It feels a bit like gathering a campfire as people swap stories. It’s great when a new one comes along to catch a person by surprise, though hearing the same song multiple times means being able to sing along. Either way, this music makes a great traveling companion.

Vocalist Debi Smith, From Soprano To Alto To Soprano

Vocalist Debi Smith started out as a soprano singing in church, but after college she became interested in jazz and started developing her alto range. She and Mary Chapin Carpenter began performing around Washington, DC about the same time, but when Smith’s sister Megan, who is five years younger, came home from college, they started touring together as The Smith Sisters.

Smith is a master of many skills. She is a composer and recording artist whose songs have captured six ASCAP popular music awards and been recorded by such artists as Tom Paxton and Al Petteway. With five solo albums to her credit, she has stashed away many Wammies (Washington Area Music Awards). Her latest double-disc CD, “The Soprano” and “The Soprano Christmas,” highlights the upper register of her three-octave range. In contrast, pop fans around the country know her as one quarter of The Four Bitchin’ Babes, solo artists who write and perform their own witty songs and share others in glorious harmony. She has been heard often as both soloist and ensemble member on national radio and telecasts, among them Prairie Home Companion, All Things Considered, PBS specials, CMT’s New Country, CBS Sunday Morning and Good Morning America.

Touring with TFBB has occupied a large chunk of Smith’s life since 1994. Next month they head for Florida and will be on the road until May, followed by the gigs at the shore during the summer.

Whether singing country, pop, folk, or jazz, Smith receives raves for her solo appearances accompanying herself on guitar. She is also a master of the bodhran, an Irish hand drum, which she played on the main theme song in Ken Burns’ “The National Parks” PBS documentary. She loves the bodhran and integrates it with most of the songs she writes.

Writing is cathartic for her and a way to honor her family. She has penned songs about her son, who suffers from autism, and songs about her parents, such as “My Mother’s Hands” and “My Father Was a Quiet Man.”

Nothing pleases her more than having someone come up with tears in their eyes and tell her how much her music has uplifted them.

Opera singer makes injury claim

An international opera singer is making an injury claim over an incident which he says has ruined his career.

According to a report in the Bournemouth Echo, David Montague-Rendall was performing at the newly built Copenhagen Opera House when part of the two-tier set collapsed on him.

The venue, which opened in 2005 and is the national opera house of Denmark, is one of the most modern buildings of its kind and is located on the island of Holmen.

Mr Montague-Rendall tumbled around 15 feet and sustained serious injuries as a result. His left hip was shattered and both his shoulders were damaged.

Consequently, he is seeking accident compensation for his suffering and loss of earnings.

According to the performer, he is owed around 250,000 for his lack of income since the incident occurred.

The 61-year-old said bookings have dried up because opera companies doubt his ability to achieve the same high standards and his last performance was two years ago.

He is making his injury claim against the Danish Ministry of Culture.

Mr Montague-Rendall remarked: “During the performance two stage levels were raised to give the impression that I was underground in a tomb. “On the night in question, the stage above went sideways instead of up, resulting in the destruction of the set. “I was knocked down at least 15 feet and tried to crawl to safety to avoid being crushed.”

The legal experts seeking accident compensation on his behalf pointed out he has had to sell his house since he stopped performing.

They added that, while the Danish Ministry of Culture has admitted liability for the suffering caused by the collapse, it has not accepted the extent of the damage.

His case continues against the organisation and his lawyers noted they will carry on with their fight for justice.

Country Singer Mary Mcbride Finds Her Way Home

Country/R&B singer Mary McBride might be best described with a simple equation. Take a soulful voice finely suited to sing every patron of a New York dive bar into a musical coma. Add in the legacy of Merle Haggard and Janis Joplin. Factor in a taste for musical theater. Subtract the striving for corporate success tracksand youll get Mary McBride.

A leading voice in the recent resurgence of Americana-styled country and blues, McBride has an extended family of forefathers, fans and soon-to-be-fans ready to welcome her on to the national media stage. Originally from Louisiana, McBride moved herself and an ingrained love of traditional Southern sounds to New York City to pursue a musical career that began with short sets in an Irish Pub on Sunday afternoons.

Finding her home in country roots helped lead McBride to the theme behind her new album The Way Home. The tracks are embroidered with country, R&B, soul and rock influences, making McBride a living testament to the melting pot of musical culture in New York City, and the whole country. R&B is closely aligned with a country sound, she asserts. But I really wanted the record to be a mix and not a straight country or a straight soul record. Departing from earlier writing patterns where entire albums were laid out in two-week frenzies, McBride says The Way Home is a more thoughtful record with a range of sounds and a specific theme of wanting to feel included and wanting to feel at home.

It is this theme that McBrides current tour, The Home Tour, is built on. We are playing in rural communities, places that support affordable housing. We have a stop at a housing complex called the Chesca Apartments on the edge of Navajo nation. Later, we are playing in a farm workers community, and in Detroit, we are playing for Freedom Housea place for immigrants who seek asylum, she explains. And thats whats so exciting about this tour: every date will be completely different.

ARE YOU A COUNTRY FAN? Did you watch the CMT Awards last night? Who deserved the wins and who got robbed? Some of our faves: Carrie Underwood’s two awards (you go, girl!) and Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” steal for Group Video of the Year. And shockerTaylor went home empty-handed. Let us know who YOU would’ve picked!
