Casio Cdp-100 Versus Yamaha Np-30 – Digital Piano Comparison

There are many people who would like to play the piano in there own home. However, traditional acoustic pianos offer many drawbacks. They are big, heavy, expensive and they go out of tune. Instead of an acoustic piano, an obvious alternative would be to get a digital piano. They offer none of these drawbacks plus they have additional features like more than one piano tone and headphone sockets for silent practice.

If you are a beginner then there are two obvious candidates from which to choose. They are the Casio CDP-100 and the Yamaha NP-30. In this article I set out to explain their differences and their pros and cons enabling you to make a better informed decision should you wish to buy one.

Keyboard
A standard modern piano keyboard has 88 keys (i.e. 7 octaves). The CDP-100 has 88 weighted keys with scaled hammer action whereas the NP-30 only has 76 keys with graded soft touch (lower keys are heavy; higher keys are light). The general consensus of opinion amongst players is that the Casio provides the most realistic action and comes closest to the actual feel of playing a real piano.

Sound
The CDP-100 has 5 different piano tones onboard whereas the NP-30 has 10. Both are capable of producing a realistic grand piano sound from one of these tones. Additionally the CDP-100 has 5 demo songs whereas the NP-30 has 10. These songs are ideal for playing along to in order to gain practice. The CDP-100 has a 2x 8W speaker system whereas the NP-30 has 2x 6W. Despite this the NP-30 is regarded as producing the slightly better quality sound from its speakers.

Portability and Construction
Both these instruments are extremely portable due to their lightweight although the CDP-100 is physically slightly larger due to its bigger keyboard. Aesthetically they both look very attractive. The CDP-100 is finished in black/grey whereas the NP-30 is available in either black or silver finish. Additionally the CDP-100 is available with a matching stand which may make it look more attractive in your home.

Conclusion
Whichever of these keyboards you choose to buy the one thing you will get is fantastic value for money. However, the one you do choose will be the one which suits your own requirements best. In favour of the CDP-100 is the 88 note keyboard with its superior realism and feel. On the other hand, the NP-30 offers more onboard piano tones and songs, and the quality of sound output is better.

The CDP-100 is significantly more expensive than the NP-30 by a factor of approximately 50%. However, the NP-30 does not actually claim to be a digital piano (Yamaha refer to it as digital keyboard in its marketing material, probably due to the less capable keyboard). If you really are after an acoustic piano replacement then the CDP-100 might be a better choice.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface – The Midi Trinity

Officially, MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, and it was invented in 1982. These days, it refers to three components:

1. A physical connector between electronic instruments and between electronic instruments and a MIDI controller, usually a keyboard. The connector takes the form of MIDI IN and MIDI OUT jacks form which MIDI cables can bet plugged into any electronic instruments (and you’d be surprised at how much music hardware out there today is MIDI-capable almost every detachable keyboard is!)

2. A message format this message format is the heart of MIDI. This format is made up not of the sounds themselves, but simply the commands that are issued by the MIDI keyboard to the electronic instruments telling them how to play a given song (play the violin turn down the volume to XX, adjust the pitch to YY, etc.)

With the above two components, a musician was able to control a string of musical instruments from a single keyboard, giving him a one-man band effect.

3. A storage format in other words, MIDI files. This latecomer of the MIDI trinity was what really did the trick because it allowed musicians to record their creations and tweak them on many different parameters until they got it sounding just they way they wanted it. Without this, MIDI songs could not be played back, because since MIDI commands include only the instructions to the instrument on how to play the song and not the actual music itself, they cannot be recorded in audio format. Now MIDI files can be recorded, emailed, or even downloaded from the Internet.

A MIDI studio can now be produced in two ways via hardware or software. The hardware version involves connecting a keyboard (using MIDI cables) to the MIDI jack of an electronic instrument and then stringing together up to 16 of these instruments in a daisy chain by way of their MIDI IN and MIDI OUT jacks. The software version keeps the MIDI keyboard (or other MIDI controller such as a MIDI guitar, etc.), while the instruments appear in virtual form on a computer screen (various software programs such as Reason, Logic, and Cubase can do this).

Those of us who were born in the mid to late seventies and beyond grew up in a system of education that everything was handfed to us, thus the majority of us do not learn very well on our own. Learning to play a musical instrument from a book requires a certain amount of self teaching ability. Learn To Play Piano A Digital Or An Acoustic Piano

If I have to choose between buying an acoustic piano or a digital piano what is the best choice? let’s take a look at the different choices if you want to learn to play piano.

Personally I haven’t been forced to make the decision between buying a normal upright piano and a digital piano as I have both in my home. I can see advantages in both types of pianos when practicing the art of learning to play piano.

A normal upright piano produces sounds with hammers that strikes the strings. A digital piano on the other hand tries to duplicate the feeling of playing an acoustic piano.

Most people are familiar with the normal upright piano but what advantages has a digital piano?

First let us describe a digital piano.

A digital piano consists of a keyboard with weighted key action, sensors that detect the velocity when you play the keys and a set of sounds you can choose from. To make it possible to listen to the piano when you play you have an amplifier and loudspeakers and headphone jacks.

Here are some advantages with a digital piano:

1. A digital piano doesn’t need to be tuned. A normal acoustic piano you should tune once or twice a year. If you can’t tune a piano yourself you have to turn to a piano tuner. It can be quite expensive of course. Even a piano tuner has to pay his bills.

2. You can practice silently. A digital piano usually has a headphone jack so by using headphones you can practise as much as you want without disturbing neighbours or family members.

3. Midi interface. A digital piano usually has a midi interface which makes it possible to connect your piano to a computer and use music software like notation programs or a sequenser program or a software synthesizer.

What then are the disadvantages of having a digital piano?

1. The sounds in an acoustic piano are produced by strings vibrating and the different pitches interact in ways that you cannot copy on a digital piano. The sound quality of the sounds produced by digital pianos are becoming better and better but it is still a completely different way of producing sounds.

2. A digital piano is limited when it comes to producing different tone colors by different ways of playing. An accomplished pianist might feel limited by the sampled sounds.

There are many more things to say about choosing a piano but this is a beginning.

As you can see it is not so easy to decide what’s best for you. If you can’t decide what type of piano to buy you can do as I have done. Have both types of pianos and keep smiling.
